#MAPEITechTip: Flooring tile…why is it important to know the TCNA ‘Service Rating’?

As tile format size (up to 5’ x 10’) begins to increase, and tile thickness (3mm to 6mm) begins to decrease, it is critical to match the ‘right floor tile installation’ to the ‘right service environment’.  Using ASTM C627 test method, a series of baselines have been established and published in the most current TCNA Handbook as ‘Service Requirements’, EXTRA HEAVY, HEAVY, MODERATE, LIGHT & RESIDENTIAL.  
 

This test is performed using either a Robinson or Universal Floor Tester under conditions similar to actual system layering and usage based on cycles 1 through 14.  The final assessment of the damage to the installation system includes only the damage to the tile and grout joints contacted by the weighted wheels (hard or soft rubber or steel). Why all this testing for a floor tile? 
 
Installing a tile rated only for ‘RESIDENTIAL’ in a ‘HEAVY’ (ie: shopping mall) environment runs the risk of catastrophic failure that can lead to tile edges chipping, point load failure, and grout cracking and popping out—leaving trip hazards and unexpected costly downtime.   Always consult the tile manufacturer for the recommended ‘service rating’ and 'installation environment' limitations prior to selection and application of your tile or stone tile system.
