What do you do with a 29’ long wall with a vaulted ceiling?

When I purchased my new townhome one of the key features that I was excited to have was vaulted ceilings, giving my home a more spacious feel. However, this meant that I had one wall, 29’ long that met the peak of the roof at 17’ with a diminishing slope down to 10’. I was left with the dilemma what to do with this large blank canvas?  The previous owners installed a series of mirror strips on the wall however this made my townhome look like an office building from the 1980’s, so I removed the mirrors and brought it back to a blank painted canvas—now what do I do?
 

Fortunately working for MAPEI, I realize that my options are really limitless—3D tiles, wood, cork, leather, glass, and the new kid on the block, thin-body porcelain tiles. Since I had 400sq.ft of wall, I was looking for a finished covering that would really make a statement—the new thin-body porcelain tiles deliver this bold statement. The variety of patterns are really limitless with the new printing and finishing techniques that manufacturers are using to mimic virtually any surface found in nature to even a metallic look.  
 

Since I have a lot of copper, metal and wood pieces in my home, I decided to go with a more industrial look by using Laminam by Crossville’s porcelain oxide series, Nero (see fig. 3) in the 3’ x 10’ panels, set in a horizontal brick pattern.  I am excited to be able to use MAPEI’s new Ultralite S2 Mortar which takes lightweight mortar technology to the next level with its superior transfer properties and special wet-out characteristics—it is the perfect fit for this installation! Stay tuned for my next blog post this week that will chronicle the installation of these panels on my living room wall….
