The Simancas Viaduct, also known as a Romanesque bridge, is an impressive 13th-century work built in limestone ashlar and which spans the river Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid in the region of Castile-León.
Its exposure to environmental phenomena and its function as a connecting infrastructure have meant that, over time, various interventions have been carried out that have modified the appearance of some of the 17 arches that make up the bridge, its buttresses and its deck. The refurbishment work carried out in 2024 aimed to restore the bridge to its original appearance, as well as to guarantee its stability through interventions such as the reconstruction of the parapet, the cleaning and sanitation of all surfaces, the repair of the foundations and the replacement of the pavement. The works were awarded to the construction company Mahoci, Martin Holgado Obra Civil SL, who used the company Impalag S.L. for the waterproofing works, using Mapei products as a solution. The work on the bridge deck included the removal of the old asphalt pavement, waterproofing and the installation of a new pavement of cobblestones and granite slabs, materials that blend in completely with the appearance of the original structure. Description of the interventions and the application process: 1. Removal of the current asphalt pavement using a milling machine to reach the bridge deck support 2. Cleaning and regularisation of the support. Before waterproofing the support, sanitation works are carried out to guarantee its integrity and mechanical resistance, as well as the correct design of slopes that allow the proper functioning of the water runoff from the deck. In addition, a thorough cleaning is carried out to promote the correct adhesion of the waterproofing product. 3. Waterproofing of the substrate by applying the highly elastic two-component cementitious mortar Mapelastic Smart. The application of this elastic and water-resistant membrane guarantees protection against water filtration and humidity, prolonging the lifespan of the bridge and protecting its structure. Mapelastic Smart, being a highly elastic product, is ideal for adapting to the possible structural movements of the bridge, whether due to use or to thermal effects. In addition, it is a membrane with high resistance to aggressive agents, protecting against chlorides and CO2, preventing carbonation and other possible effects of attacks. 4. The last step was the installation of the new paving of cobblestones and granite slabs and their grouting, achieving an incredible appearance and giving the bridge a new look and new life. |
