The underground 9.5km stretch of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line traverses the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. The main method of construction is by tunneling using tunnel boring machines (TBM). The geological conditions of the Klang Valley make tunneling beneath Kuala Lumpur extremely challenging. The alignment will cut through different geological formations with sedimentary rocks such as mudstone, shale, phylite and sandstone, as well as erratic Karstic features comprising eroded limestone rock beneath a layer of top soil. Two types of TBMs are being used: Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines for sedimentary rock formations and Variable Density TBMs (specially developed jointly by world-renowned manufacturer Herrenknecht AG of Germany and MMC Gamuda joint venture) for the limestone formations. In view of the above challenges, the main contractor needed strong, reliable and experienced suppliers - MAPEI to provide materials for soil stabilisation and conditioning.
