The Diagonal Occidental 414 hotel is located on the corner of Avenida Diagonal and Carrer del Bruc, forming part of one of the city blocks of the Cerdá Plan and facing the modernist Casa de les Punxes, in the city of Barcelona.
The project consisted of maintaining and consolidating the existing façade of the plot and demolishing it and developing a hotel inside it. The final result has received various awards and has been a finalist in the 2021 Mapei Awards for Sustainable Architecture, as it has been successfully integrated into the existing heritage context of the area. Sustainable and passive architecture strategies were employed such as: the treatment and control of natural lighting through the use of traditional Alicante blinds, the efficient generation of natural cross ventilation, acoustic treatment through the use of sound-absorbent materials and the design of every detail of the interior elements, the use of renewable energy and the high inertia of the south façade (the façade that is being preserved) and the circularity of the elements, such as the recovery of the wooden doors and the hydraulic tiles of the flooring or the reconstruction with original stones, creating comfortable spaces, taking care of the well-being of the end users and respecting the environment and the context of its implementation. The project design envisaged the maintenance and consolidation of the south façade, the main façade, as a culturally sustainable strategy, and the development of the rest of the structure with a new building for the hotel. The development of the project was characterised by the complexity of its location in a heritage protection area. On some occasions, the use of technological and innovative materials is limited due to their affinity with the pre-existing elements and their cultural character. To overcome this complexity, the support of the city and the clients was sought, the façade was respected to give continuity to the heritage language of the block and a large part of the existing elements were recovered. In terms of the design, the greatest difficulty lay in the organic forms and the difficult edges of the project, which was masterfully resolved in the application of the systems. The MAPETHERM EPS SYSTEM was selected as the strategy for the interior façade envelope using the SATE (external thermal insulation composite system) passive system, reducing the effect of thermal bridges in the façade and achieving a reduction of up to 35% in heating costs. This resulted in significant financial savings for the client, a reduction in the use of active heating systems - with the consequent reduction in the generation of heat islands in the blocks - protecting the environment and improving interior comfort for the users of the Diagonal Occidental 414 hotel. The MAPETHERM EPS SYSTEM was not only selected for its energy contribution but also for its ability to achieve the colours and shades desired by the client. The envelope, made up of the historic stone façade, with high inertia, the interior façade with the MAPEI MAPETHERM EPS SYSTEM ETICS and the inverted roof, constituted a highly passive element respecting sociocultural, environmental and economic aspects. Execution process: For the installation of the ETICS system on the interior façade, as it was a new building, the flatness and suitability of the substrate to which the entire MAPETHERM EPS SYSTEM was to be anchored was verified. Once the suitability of the substrate had been verified, the MAPETHERM EPS insulating panels were bonded using MAPETHERM AR1 single-component cementitious adhesive. Once the insulation panels had been glued and fixed correctly, the reinforced plaster was applied using two coats of the single-component cementitious mortar MAPETHERM AR1 and the fibreglass mesh MAPETHERM NET, embedded in the first coat of mortar. The plaster was fixed to the substrate using the corresponding plugs to ensure that the system was properly anchored. The SILANCOLOR TONACHINO PLUS siloxane coating with a grain size of 0.7 has been selected for the final finish thanks to its water repellence, breathability and resistance to algae and mould, with the prior application of the pigmented siloxane base coat SILANCOLOR BASE COAT to guarantee colour uniformity and improve the water repellence of the system. |
