Engineer: Pierce Engineers, Madison, WI Contractor: Findorff, Madison, WI Ready Mix Supplier: Wingra Redi-Mix Project Facts: A $36 million dollar, 12-story building with underground parking is constructed entirely of concrete except for the brick and glass exterior. High Performance Concrete consisted of 11,000 psi columns on 4 below grade levels of the parking structure as well as the first five levels of above grade columns. Post-tension slab mixes were poured throughout the winter months. These mixes required consistent high early strengths and high slump concrete, which were achieved through combinations of low water –cement ratio mixes utilizing Melchem and Super Set. The column mix produced compressive strengths of over 11,000 psi in 7 days and strengths averaging above 13,000 psi in 28 days. Flowing concrete was needed because of the dense heavy steel reinforcement required. The end product had the appearance of a dark marble finish. The owner wanted a building constructed with “Green Technology” so the concrete mix designs consisted of Portland cement, fly ash, slag and micro-silica. |
