The first Indianapolis 500 concluded for the Andretti Global cars supported by Mapei as official sponsor. Kyle Kirkwood achieved his best career result at the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500 with a seventh-place finish, showing great resilience after a pit stop penalty. Marco Andretti, on the other hand, was making some progress moving up from his 19th starting position but ending his race on lap 114 after spinning into the barriers.

It has been a complicated 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500 for the Andretti Global team of which Mapei is an official sponsor on the No. 98 MAPEI / CURB Honda driven by Marco Andretti and the No. 27 AutoNation Honda driven by Kyle Kirkwood. The race started with a delay of more than four hours due to bad weather: Indycar doesn’t race on ovals in the rain and, as water was the big protagonist on Sunday morning in Indianapolis, they waited until the end of the disturbance to dry the track so that the drivers could race in complete safety.

Best career result for Kirkwood at Indy

It was a good seventh-place finish for Kyle Kirkwood. The American driver, INDYCAR racewinner, was in the leading group for half the race aboard his No. 27 AutoNation Honda of which Mapei is a sponsor. Then, unfortunately, a penalty for contact with an opponent in the pits caused him to lose a lot of ground. But, despite this, he did not lose heart, finishing in an excellent seventh place overall, achieving his best career result in this race.

A challenging race for Marco

It was far more challenging for Marco Andretti in the No. 98 MAPEI / CURB Honda, which Mapei is the primary partner. The grandson of Mario Andretti struggled to get into a rhythm at the start, only to end up against the barriers after a spin on lap 114. A bitter epilogue, Marco, who raced this race for the 19th consecutive time, unfortunately had to postpone his appointment with his first victory once again.
