Vinavil, a Mapei Group subsidiary, has achieved ISCC Plus certification for its plant in Villadossola (Northern Italy), marking a new significant step toward sustainable production. This certification is further evidence of the company’s commitment to the circular economy by promoting responsible sourcing and sustainable raw materials.

The European Union's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set numerous goals for environmental and social sustainability and the use of manufacturing processes based on the principle of the circular economy.
In pursuit of these goals, Vinavil, a subsidiary of the Mapei Group, has been awarded ISCC Plus certification for its manufacturing plant in Villadossola (Province of Verbania, Northern Italy) and is already planning to obtain certification for its production unit in Ravenna (Central Italy).

The ISCC Plus certification

The ISCC Plus Scheme - International Sustainability & Carbon Certification - is an international standard focused specifically on the concept of the circular economy, which certifies commitment to and the quality of management in terms of sustainable production. ISCC was one of the first schemes to be launched in Europe regarding the sustainability of products in the renewable energy sector and is now one of the most widespread and recognised in many sectors.
More specifically, ISCC Plus is ISCC’s certification system focused on the sustainable management of raw materials to be extended to categories not strictly related to the biofuels/renewable energy sector.
In recent years, Vinavil has moved towards the enforcement of recognised standards subject to independent third-party verification, which can guarantee transparent data and information conveyed externally, giving greater authority and credibility to its declarations. The company is also committed to promoting the use of ISCC Plus certified raw materials to enhance the sustainability of its products by verifying the suppliers used and qualifying them in compliance with the requirements set by this standard. By adhering to this certification, Vinavil also promotes and supports the responsible sourcing of renewable raw materials. The certification process calls for a clear chain of custody, which, combined with third-party verification of miscellaneous links, promotes transparency along the supply chain.
This will enable Vinavil to offer its market "Bio-attributed products" made from sustainable raw materials, including "Biomaterials" derived from virgin biomass, "Circular products" derived from the mechanical and/or chemical recycling of materials of non-biological origin (fossil-based), "Bio-Circular products" made from waste and residues of biological origin, and "Renewable products" coming from processes using renewable energy sources.

The Mass Balance

The products supplied will have declared sustainability properties guaranteed through a certified Mass Balance. A Mass Balance is the chain of custody method through which the sustainability properties of materials are assigned on an accountable basis.
Sustainable and non-sustainable materials may be mixed during the various steps in the process, but they must be identified and tracked throughout the chain of custody on an accountable basis.
