Mapei's presence in the world of motorsport continues to grow. After the works carried out a few months ago at the Imola and Misano tracks, the leading company in chemical products for the building industry took part in the renovation works of the Monza Circuit, one of the most iconic and historical motor racing tracks in the world.
The work focused on several areas of the circuit. The aim was to improve the safety of the sports facility and the performance of the circuit in the run-up to the Formula 1 Pirelli Italian Grand Prix, which is scheduled for the 1st of September. The project involved the removal of the old asphalt layer and the installation of a new road surface. Specifically, the track was widened, and new kerbs were installed. Additionally, three existing underpasses were expanded and secured, and a fourth one was constructed, and all of them have been equipped with access and exit routes both for vehicles and pedestrians.
Mapei supplied a wide range of products, to ensure the maximum efficiency and durability of the work. For the road surface, Mapei provided its innovative technology to create a more sustainable and durable asphalt, using functional chemical additives and thermoplastic polymers derived from advanced recycling processes. These technologies are the result of a collaboration with Iren, a multi-service company specialising in integrated solutions for energy efficiency. Furthermore, road markings and kerbs were painted using the products from the Mapei sports flooring range, which ensure a highly resistant and visible surface, enhancing the safety of the circuit.
The works were not limited to the track. The underpasses were also addressed with their structures being fully waterproofed to protect them from humidity and weathering.
Mapei liquid water-reducing admixtures were added to the concrete used for the underpasses, allowing for a 20% reduction of mixing water. For the base bituminous conglomerate and binder, products that significantly improve the binder’s performance in service were used. The waterproofing of the underpasses is guaranteed by the Mapei technologies complemented by some Polyglass products - a subsidiary of the Mapei Group and one of Europe’s leading manufactures of waterproofing membranes.
Finally, products from the Zero* line - the Mapei range with fully offset CO₂ emissions for the entire life cycle, were chosen for the reconstruction of the concrete walls of the pits. The joints of the pits flooring were grouted with products that guarantee a durable and resistant finish.
Mapei remains committed to supporting major infrastructure projects in the world of motorsport, providing innovative solutions and high-quality materials. The refurbishment of the Monza Circuit, in preparation of the 16th race of the Formula 1 world championship, is another example of the Italian company's ability to meet the specific needs of each worksite, delivering innovation, safety and exceptional performance.
