Ambrogio Beccaria unfurls the sails with Mapei for the Québec Saint-Malo regatta

The oldest crewed transatlantic race from West to East
June 28, 2024
After his two brilliant consecutive victories at the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 and the Transat CIC 2024, Ambrogio Beccaria is ready for the second event of the year aboard his Alla Grande - Pirelli, the latest generation Class40 of which Mapei is Global Sponsor since 2022. Next 30th June at 8:00 am (Italian time), the Québec Saint-Malo will start. It is the oldest transatlantic regatta from West to East in crewed form.

The Québec Saint-Malo, which has now reached its 10th edition, has been held every four years since 1984. I It was created by André Langlois to celebrate the anniversary of French explorer Jacques Cartier's first voyage to Québec. The historic race, emblematic of the link between the Old and the New Continent, crosses almost 3,000 nautical miles passing by the St Lawrence River (Canada), then facing the waters of the North Atlantic to finally land on French territory on the cliffs of Brittany. Its peculiarity is that it takes place about a third of the route in river waters before reaching the open sea, making it a mixture of coastal and offshore racing.

The Québec Saint-Malo, celebrating its 40th anniversary, makes its return after eight years due to the pandemic that led to the 2020 edition not being held. This year's regatta was long-awaited, with 28 boats competing, including the Class40.

The first miles will be along the delta of the St. Lawrence River in Canada: a navigation characterised by currents and tides as well as intense maritime traffic. Ambrogio Beccaria says, 'It will be a complicated start. The line is three miles south of Québec City where the river bed is very narrow, full of currents and rocks. We will have to manoeuvre a lot and we preferred to be three instead of four, to be less heavy".

Bastian Oger, boat captain of Alla Grande – Pirelli, will be embarking on this new adventure together with Ambrogio, with whom he has already won the last edition of the 40' Malouine Lamotte, and Julien Villon, experienced ocean sailor. For all three it will be the first time at the historic Québec Saint-Malo
"We are a very good crew," says Beccaria, "and we are very complementary: Bastian is focused on the reliability of the boat and very motivated, while Julien will be more concerned with the weather and strategy.

Also, for this regatta, the Mapei Sport Research Centre, excellence in scientific research, supports Ambrogio in athletic preparation and medical-sports assistance.
Mapei is ready to set sail with him in this new challenge. Good wind to Ambrogio and the whole crew!
