Central Market

Central Market located in Central district was a fresh food market and the first wet market in Hong Kong. It was precedently known as Canton Bazzar that opened back in 1842, it was relocated to the current location around 1850. The market had been rebuilt several times and it was rebuilt to current style in the 1938 and hosted with over 200 booths in 4 stories. Central Market survived the Japanese occupation period of Hong Kong during the World War II, witnessed the Central district developed into the “commercial heart” of Hong Kong and it was the biggest meat market in Southeast Asia in 1967. Together with the 1930’s contemporary architectural Bauhas style and the Streamlined Moderne influenced design (evidenced from the round corners, predominantly symmetrical interior layout and symmetrical façade fronting), it had earned a unique significance in our history. There are two existing Bauhas market buildings in Hong Kong, namely the Central Market and the Wan Chai Market. Central Market is now a Grade 3 historic building as per Hong Kong’s Antiquities and Monuments Office.
