The 1st Phase of the new airport, designed to be the world's largest airport in terms of annual passenger capacity in Istanbul, was officially opened on 29 October 2018. While Phase 2 and Phase 3 are planned to be opened between 2021-2022, the sixth and final runway and Phase 4 are expected to be fully operational by 2028. The new Istanbul Airport aims to position itself as an important travel hub and an important player on the world aviation scene. When completed, the airport, which will spread over 76 km2 and gather the world's largest terminal under one roof, is planned to host 200 million passengers. Mapei Turkey have started to supply products to the project in 2016 (MAPEFIX VE SF, MAPELASTIC, MAPEGROUT 430) and continued to supply in 2017 with a broader scope, providing products and systems for the manholes, terminal building wet areas, water tanks & chemical anchoring in various parts of Terminal 1. Some innovative products and systems which a part of the Mapei’s product range have been used for the first time in Turkey. MAPEFIX VE SF has been preferred for the implementation of bar reinforcement which has been applied too often throughout the project. Due to the fast pace of the field operation MAPEFIX VE SF’s quicker setting time was great advantage when compared to other traditional epoxy based chemical anchor materials. MAPELASTIC FOUNDATION SYSTEM has been used in waterproofing since both negative and positive water pressure present in the water tanks. Prior to MAPELASTIC FOUNDATION application, PRIMER 3296 which is a very strong consolidation primer has been applied to make a surface with a perfect adherence performance. At the final coat of the application, either MAPECOAT I 24 or MAPECOAT DW 25 has been used for the protection of waterproofing layers during the service life. MAPECOAT I 24 has a high strength to chemical substances which are abrasive and MAPECOAT DW 25 is being suitable contacting with drinking water. One of the most important detail which needed to be solved was the waterproofing of pipe inlets and outlets. For this problem, MAPEPROOF SWELL, which is called ‘expanding gusset’ in the sector, has been applied. The site’s landmark air traffic control tower has been designed by PININFARINA and AECOM., selected from six solutions proposed by international architecture studios, including Zaha Hadid, Fuksas, Moshe Safdie, Grimshaw- Nordic and RMJM. The ATC Tower has won the prestigious International Architecture Award 2016, assigned by the Chicago Athenaeum: the Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. The design concept of tower with elements evocative of Turkish culture, is in fact inspired by the tulip, for many centuries a symbol of Istanbul and an important cultural reference in Turkish history. The shapes of the flower have been redesigned and reinterpreted through Pininfarina’s identity, based on its profound knowledge in automotive design, wind tunnel modelling and on the strong influence inherited from aerodynamic shapes used in aeronautical design. AQUAFLEX ROOF PREMIUM has been used for the waterproofing of famous ATC Tower as being the best solution for it can be applied for both old and new building which have slope or flat surface with irregularities. Thanks to its special fillers, its resistance to fire and water ponding which were the features stand out in the specification process. MAPECOAT I 600 W has been used as an adherence promoter primer and MAPEFLEX PU 40 has been preferred for the sealing of joints. At almost every part of the project, especially in terminal building, KERACOLOR FF has been used for grouting of large size 60*120 cm tiles. Also, ELASTORAPID classified as C2 FTE S2 two component adhesive has been used at some piers within the scope of the project. For the green terraces which is 75.000 m2 at the departing passenger floor, hybrid polyurea PURTOP 400 M has been preferred for the waterproofing. PURTOP 400 M have an excellent resistance to alkalis & acids and elongation rate at failure which is over 400%. Also, it has the certification for resistant to root penetration which is mandatory for green terrace application. Before applying PURTOP 400 M, PRIMER SN which is filling epoxy primer has been used. Even though the product’s mechanical performances are not affected by the UV rays, two components, aliphatic, highly elastic, polyurethane-based MAPEFLOOR FINISH 55 has been used as a used as a protective finishing layer for 2.000 m2 area on which colour protection was needed.
