A Mapei subfloor preparation system has been installed at the new Hebburn Tri-Station in South Tyneside – one of the UK’s first carbon neutral emergency service tri-stations. Home to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service, the new two-storey building was delivered by Esh Construction, working in partnership with TWFRS. The Mapei system, including an EMICODE: EC1 Plus certified primer and levelling compound, was installed throughout the station by F Wilkinson Flooring.
Hebburn Tri-Station is one of 17 community fire stations located across Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. The new carbon neutral station replaces the previous Hebburn Community Fire Station, which served its community for nearly 60 years. Compromising two buildings, the site includes staff accommodation, offices and bays for emergency vehicles, as well as a training facility to support and enhance the skills of specialist rescue, as well as rope rescue fire fighters.
All walls, floors, the roof and structure of the buildings have been designed to be as energy and thermal efficient as possible, as reflected throughout the specification. Special features include photovoltaic roof panels, ground source heat pumps, light vehicle charging (EV) points, a wildflower meadow to help increase local biodiversity and a rainwater recycling system.
During the preparation of the building’s power floated concrete subfloors, Mapeproof One Coat damp proof membrane was applied throughout to control residual and constructional moisture. Eco Prim T Plus universal acrylic primer was then applied and the subfloors were levelled with Latexplan Trade – a protein-free, low odour levelling and smoothing compound with high compressive strength. Both the primer and levelling compound feature very low VOC EMICODE: EC1 Plus formulations, promoting a safe application and environment.
