Mapefloor System complements modern reinvention of Newark Works

July 10, 2023

A Mapei Mapefloor Resin Flooring System has been installed as part of a stunning transformation of the previously derelict Newark Works in Bath Quays’ new business district.  A vibrant new community for entrepreneurs and businesses in creative industries, TCN’s new industrial styled, collaborative workspaces are set within a remodelled historic crane factory.  Newark Works was designed by Bristol-based Ferguson Mann Architects and delivered by main contractor, BAM Construction. Owned and operated by TCN, Newark Works is now a thriving campus with 80% space let after only eight months since opening. Installed by Craftsman Flooring, the seamless grey toned resin floor finish was chosen to provide an exceptionally durable surface, whilst complementing the building’s industrial fabric and contemporary interior design.

Located on the riverfront at Bath Quays South in central Bath, the original Grade II listed crane factory building dates back to 1857. It was constructed for Stothert & Pitt Ltd, an internationally renowned engineering firm that was founded in the city in 1785.  A specialist in crane design - including the design and production of dockside and offshore cranes – Stothert & Pitt Ltd developed the first steam crane in 1851, before the arrival of the first electric crane in 1892-3. Many of its cranes survive around the world today and several are listed.

Drawing inspiration from the building’s rich heritage, Ferguson Mann’s design embraces brick and steel, retaining the character of the original building with its huge halls and high ceilings.  The remodelled interior features internal streets, with meeting, collaborative and breakout areas.  To maintain its industrial feel, Mapei recommended its highly durable Mapefloor Resin Flooring System in a pale grey colour tone, RAL 7035. Throughout the project, Mapei’s technical team provided onsite advice on preparation and application, including guidance on crack repairs to the original screed, and mixing and installation of the resin.

The specification included Mapei Eporip – a two-component solvent-free epoxy used to repair cracks within the subfloor – and the Mapefloor System which comprised:  Mapefloor I 302 SL – a two-component epoxy formulation; Mapecolor Paste colouring system and Mapefloor Finish 58 W – the top layer surface which provides additional resistance to wear, abrasion and chemicals, creating an easy care, highly-durable surface.
