Mapei products have been used to carry out repair and refurbishment works at York Racecourse’s Bustardthorpe Stand as part of a multimillion-pound investment at the racecourse. The project, completed by national specialist concrete repair and waterproofing contractors, EPR Contracts, included renovation of concrete terrace steps, underlying concrete frame of the stand and waterproofing of surfaces using Mapei primer, membrane and coloured coating. All products were supplied by EPMS.
York Racecourse, one of the UK’s premier flat racing venues, attracts 350,000 visitors annually and hosts world class racing, like the Ebor Festival. In 2024, its Juddmonte International was named the Longines World’s Best Horserace. The Bustardthorpe Development enhanced racegoer facilities with new lawns, enhanced bars and food outlets, and sustainable features like solar panels and rainwater harvesting. The project has won industry awards, including the Racing Foundation Green Award for environmental excellence. York was also crowned 2024 Showcase Champion Racecourse at the RCA Showcase Awards. Gavin Pattison, Head of Facilities, said, ‘’The Bustardthorpe Development sets a new standard for racecourse sustainability while enhancing the visitor experience.’’ Officially opened by Queen Camilla, it reinforces York’s commitment to innovation.
Following the repair of the terrace steps and concrete frame - which included repair of all defective concrete to the frame and upper terrace steps, along with the application of smoothing treads and risers - Mapei Purtop Primer FT, an ultra-rapid waterproof primer, was applied to the concrete surface. Purtop 1000 N – a solvent-free pure polyurea membrane – was then spray-applied using a high-pressure, bi-mixer type pump, to form a waterproof coating across the concourse. The surface was then protected with Mapecoat TNS Fast. A rapid film-forming, water-based coloured coating, Mapecoat TNS Fast is designed to protect and colour concrete surfaces in areas subjected to a high level of traffic. Two coats of the acrylic resin-based coating were applied, with surfaces foot traffic ready within an 8-12-hour window.
