A comprehensive Mapei tiling system has been used to complete an extensive tiling project at Porsche Centre Newport in South Wales. A brand new state-of-the-art ‘Destination’ facility, the new centre has been designed to elevate the customer experience and spans over 7,000 m2 across two floors. The centre was designed by Pier Architects and delivered by Beard Construction. The tiling project, which features porcelain and terrazzo finishes, was completed by Anderson Tiling.
Combining sophistication and function, the new centre displays all of Porsche’s latest models, including 911, 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman, Macan, Cayenne, Panamera and Taycan, as well as over 40 pre-owned cars. Special customer features include virtual reality specification lounges, meeting rooms and working pods and a 21-bay workshop.
Following consultation with the architectural team, the Mapei specification was agreed, including floor preparation products, adhesives, grouts and sealant, featuring EMICODE: EC1 Plus (very low VOC) formulations throughout.
During Anderson Tiling’s preparation works, three products were used to prepare the concrete slab throughout the showroom: Eco Prim T Plus - a universal acrylic primer - and Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 fibre-reinforced smoothing compound. To large areas of the showroom, Mapeguard UM 35 waterproofing, uncoupling and anti-fracture membrane was then applied over the screed in order to combat the potential stresses from expansion and contraction of the tiled finish, which could occur due to high temperature fluctuations through the large glazed façade.
The tile specification included 1200 x 600mm porcelain tiles and 1000 x 1000mm terrazzo, installed throughout the showroom, on ground and first floor levels. Floor tiles were bonded with Keraquick XL Fibrelite fibre-reinforced cement-based rapid set adhesive and terrazzo wall tiles were installed with Keraflex Maxi S1 deformable cementitious adhesive.
Throughout the workshop, 200 x 200mm porcelain floor and wall tiles were bonded with Keraquick S1 quick-setting, deformable adhesive and grouted using Kerapoxy Easy Design epoxy grout to provide a tough, durable grout joint impermeable to oils and other fluids. The adhesive was also used within WC’s, along with Mapesil AC pure acetic silicone sealant for corner joints.
Other Mapei products specified included Ultracolor Plus 114 grout from the Zero line - with CO2 offset in the entire lifecycle* - which was used extensively throughout the building, including within showroom areas and WC’s.
