Extension of St. Joseph's Church Fanling

Built in 1953, St. Joseph’s Church (Fanling) has served the Fanling community for over 60 years. It is a Grade III Historic Building, a prominent landmark and the only Catholic Church in Luen Wo Hui. The Church found a need to expand its facilities to meet the increasing demand for church services. The three existing church buildings cannot be altered but preserved, therefore, the church adopts the idea of conducting an underground construction as part of the expansion project. The new extension include a church in the basement that can house 700-800 people a roof top garden, a new bell tower, a multi-purpose activity centre, an open foyer and a priest quarters in the adjoining lot. The basement is waterproofed with Mapei’s Mapeproof FBT system, a fully-bonded waterproofing membrane for underground structures, which forms a highly effective barrier against groundwater, moisture in the ground and radon as well as methane gases.
