Zayed Velodrome

Mapei contributed towards refurbishment of the cycling race track
December 18, 2022

Zayed Velodrome is the only velodrome in the UAE providing a 250-meter looped and slanted track. It is an Olympic standard track constructed out of concrete. It hosted the Arab Track Cycling Championships in 2010 and is run by the UAE Cycling Federation. Staged at the Zayed Velodrome, near the Sharjah International Airport, the 30th Asian Cycling Championships & 17th Asian Junior Cycling Championships brought together cyclists from seven different Arab countries – Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, and the UAE. Mr. Cho Hee Wook, ACC President and the UCI Vice President said that it was a historical moment and that we were opening an epoch-making era to generate good momentum for pushing forward cycling in the Asian Continent, especially in the Middle East. In 2020, it was decided to do a complete refurbishment for the velodrome, including the track, middle area, and indoor amenities.

What was Mapei’s Role?

Being known as a unique track in the Middle East, Mapei was keen to include the Velodrome on our prestigious projects list once refurbishment took place in 2020.

The application of the MAPECOAT TNS CYCLE TRACK SYSTEM & MAPECOAT TNS RACETRACK for the cycle track & middle area painting was awarded to CIS Sports Fields, one of the leading companies in UAE for sports flooring solutions. As MAPEI is known to provide top-quality products, we were selected to supply the coating for the refurbishment works. Our full range of products allowed the client to choose the right solution to match their needs and overcome the challenges to guarantee the floor coating is durable and stands the harsh weather conditions in this region.

We faced many challenges. At first, cracks in the substrate. So, we treated them with ADESILEX PG2 TG, epoxy mortar, and EPORIP, epoxy bonding agent with QUARZO 1,2, silica sand, by opening the cracks and filling them using the stitch method to ensure that it doesn’t open again in the future.

The high substrate moisture content required a special primer, TRIBLOCK P, to block the substrate's moisture and ensure the excellent bond of the TNS coating on top. In other areas where moisture was not present, a specially formulated primer MAPECOAT TNS EPW PRIMER was used to enhance the bond of TNS RACETRACK to concrete substrates. At last, we had to ensure that the coating was seamless and free of the trowel or roller marks. However, thanks to the unique formulation of MAPECOAT TNS products, the ease of spray application, and outstanding application skills, we delivered perfect surfaces satisfying the Client's expectations.
